Synopsis
Josie begins working as a nanny at the McMillen Mansion. She comes from a poor sharecropper family. Jeff McMillen, the Governor of Arkansas, and his wife Claire, and 2 children. The perfect family and public figures. Claire is the heiress of the Arkansas political tradition and this dynamic unfolds in increasingly sinister detail as the story progresses
Jeff falls in love with Josie and they begin an affair. His children also love her. The couple gets more daring and go out at night to the speakeasy life, a space where races mix in the general lawlessness. Josie’s family catches on first-her father threatens to beat her and says she will bring trouble down on all their heads. When Claire finds out about her husbands’ transgressions, she will stop at nothing to avoid embarrassment.
